Do you remember your favorite book from childhood?

Man, I feel, if you were to sift through my posts, and read the bits on grade school reading, you’d agree that I’ve repeatedly documented my favorite childhood novel. And I hate to be redundant, but, for the sake of answering today’s prompt, I’ll write about it again.

The name of the book, a novel that has been out of print for many years, is the The Secret of Terror Castle. That book, a fun story similar to Scooby-Doo and Sherlock Holmes, is the first in a long series. That series goes by the title ‘The Three Investigators’. It’s certainly nothing outstanding, but it’s a prime example of ‘60s pop culture.

It also served a purpose, other than entertaining boys. This middle grade tale, since it was set in a spooky castle, cured my phobia of creepy nighttime settings…even if the change hadn’t occurred immediately. I remember reading parts, and I recall wanting to visit Long Beach, California.

Still, farming in Wisconsin, and enjoying four distinct seasons was perfect for my younger self. Through that escape, solving a mystery, with three boys only slightly older than myself, and the adventures those boys experienced, was fun and welcome. And I learned, above all else, as I read more books in this series, that reading was meant to entertain and inform.

Today, after searching Amazon, I have a first edition copy of that publication. This small paperback, which is beaten and battered, was actually pricier than most hard cover books. But, having this sitting on my shelf, meagerly standing near all the other children’s novel, reaffirms my belief. That belief is that informative and entertaining reading is worthwhile.

Have an excellent day!!
