What is your favorite season of year? Why?

As our planet rotates, orbits and tilts, the atmospheric conditions change from one moment to the next. Those forces, depending on the situation, yield different precipitation, temps and wind speeds. And as men witnessed these phenomena, they attributed those occurrences to certain periods of each year; of course, we call them seasons. With that in mind, alongside varying human tastes, with every coming and passing season, one may look forward to a specific time of year…at least more than all other seasons.

This may sound strange, and it certainly differs from my childhood, but I’d have to say fall or winter are my favorite seasons. Though, I’d have to lean towards fall. In this post, I’ll list some good reasons why.

Why I Didn’t Choose Spring

Let’s start with the two seasons I didn’t choose. Here’s why I’d rather skip spring: mud and pollen. I think spring is the worst time for outdoor recreation. Hiking in muddy forests sucks, river water levels are too high for kayaking and the allergens make my breathing difficult. Plus, it simply rains too much.

Why I Didn’t Choose Summer

Summer? Well, I don’t hate it. There’s a ton of activities happening during warmer months. Yet, there’s a ton of bugs and mosquitoes about. And yeah, allergens, at least for me, lurk around every corner. I make it sound worse than it is, but I detest running during spring and summer. Oh…and sometimes, the heat is unbearable.

Why Winter is a Better Option

Some of my favorite memories, with my family following mom’s inspiration, were spent in a tiny cabin in the woods. Around the cabin, in the sub freezing temps, animals roamed and winter activities abounded. I remember the clean, crisp air striking my ruddy cheeks. If you’re wondering, that wind was conjured while clinging to an inner tube and descending steep grades. When I was younger, I despised the short days of winter. However, in that Northwoods cabin, while heat returned to my numb extremities, I realized that, yes, for many reasons, I actually look forward to winter.

I Love Fall

Fall…after summer, the earth provides us with cooler temps…not frigid, but very, very comfortable. The forests have a different feel to them. At times, it seems their trees yield a vibrant and casual shower of leaves. Running, mountain biking, kayaking: I relish these during fall.

So that’s my choice, though I admit, I waffle between winter and fall. I do try, during those months, with every second available to me, to get out as much as I can. I know most won’t agree with me, but that’s what makes us people.

Have an excellent day.
