Who is your favorite historical figure?

This prompt really takes little thought. My favorite man, at least my chosen historical figure, an iconic symbol of American patriotism, has always been someone I admire. When you look at his long life, and his contributions to many different fields, you’ll see his deeds are still relevant today. Plus, he helped lay the foundation for the United States of America.

That man is Benjamin Franklin.

From memorable quotes to revolutionary discoveries, the man had one of the most productive minds in history. What’s crazy, the man actually retired in his forties. Yet, during that retirement, some of his most well known achievements, some that still impact our daily lives, came during those golden years. Those include stints as ambassador and post master.

Of course, his publications launched Mr. Franklin’s public life. Now, some of his words of wisdom, recorded in those periodicals, are still repeated today.

Towards the end of his life, and after the constitutional convention’s most hideous blunder, the man signed a petition which made it to congress’s floor. That request, which was debated by the House of Representatives, was a plea to abolish slavery. I’ve once read, and these were words of an Ivy League professor, had Franklin been born later in life, the Civil War might have, just might have, been avoided. But that’s total speculation, and subject to tons of arguments.

Anyways, there’s a reason, and a good reason, why, even though the man never served as president, we regard Benjamin Franklin as an important founding father. His accomplishments are well documented, and, for that and other reasons, his legacy carries on into this day and age.
