When I think back to the teachers I liked, there were a few qualities I had admired. And it was very apparent, whether through actions or words, if the man(or woman) actually cared for the subject they were teaching. I think you know what I mean; most people can tell if a certain teacher was collecting a paycheck or, thinking of what we should expect, if not what we would appreciate, if those teachers were truly interested in teaching children.

I know who my favorite teacher was. He was an engaging guy. He also seemed well prepared for his classes. Some teachers referred to notes or, worse yet, the text book. This guy, he knew what he thought you should learn, and he lectured earnestly.

What I hated, if I remember correctly, was the fact that the government stuck its nose in teaching curriculum. In ways, I feel that’s understandable, but, then, I think it cripples a good teacher. And that mentor might give up, and simply teach and prepare for standardized testing. Where’s the passion in that??

Anyways, to make this answer short and sweet, I think good teachers love the subjects they teach. They also understand the children they’re teaching. Furthermore, they also realize why the info they’re conveying is important.

As I wrap this up, I feel obligated to tell you that I’m nowhere near an authoritative voice…at least on this subject. I don’t have children, nor have I attended school in the last two decades. My opinions are from childhood and young adulthood. Yet, as the prompt had asked, I gave my best attempt at an educated opinion.
