What’s your favorite game (card, board, video, etc.)? Why?
Games. They entertain us, challenge us and insist that we interact with something from this world…or, at least, most of them do. We can watch them, participate in them or, as one may often do, we can strategize about an upcoming face off. So, now, and if my dad were to read this, it would shock the hell out of him, anyways, I’ll explain what my favorite game happens to be. In this brief Saturday post, I’ll reveal an ancient German card game.
First off, I’ll elaborate on this game’s importance, that is when it comes to my identity. In this country, many people are angry and outspoken about immigrants, and I always think it’s kind of crazy. If you’re not of an indigenous nation…man, you’re kind of contradicting yourself. I may have some true North American blood in my veins, but, mostly, I’m a descendant of immigrants.
One thing that people complain about, I’m speaking of the old blood harping on today’s American newcomers, is the fact that these immigrants cling to their heritage. Buddy…I’m the same gosh darn way. Being mainly Polish and German, I still adhere to some of those national traditions.
One German tradition is a crazy card game. When asked to explain the rules, it takes me an hour…seriously. This rather complicated game is known as sheep head.
And depending on the size of your get together, you can play with more or fewer players. Take heed, if you do change the number of contestants, you’ll play a different variation of the game. And with every variation, come subtle rule changes.
I think the greatest part of this game, at least when I think of what it means to me, is the fact this is a staple of family get togethers. Usually, after the meal, and after the dining room table was cleared, my father, his brothers and my grandfather would play this game for hours.
It could get intense.
My dad would urge me to play. I really was apprehensive. Laying the wrong card could draw the ire of your partner. And in sheep head, depending on the number of players, many times, if you’re not seasoned at the game, you may not know who your partner is. So, yeah, big freak out…and I had no clue why they were ticked.
Anyways, despite those ultra-competitive moments, I have great memories of playing cards with my family. So, no matter how many people are sitting at the table, and even if I’m oblivious to who’s holding the queen of clubs, I’ll smear my partner.
Have an Excellent Day!!
