What do you love about where you live?
I think anywhere, minus Antarctica, has the potential of being a decent place to live. Of course, every place has its pros and cons. That being stated, and considering that I live in this Midwestern city, today, I’ll explain what I love about Green Bay, Wisconsin.
First off, Green Bay is a little big city. You may ask, “What the hell do you mean by that?” Here’s my reasoning:
Green Bay isn’t a sprawling metropolis. And, although interstate highways run on both the east and west side, traffic jams are rare. Plus, despite constant traffic on the city’s main drags, true congestion is lacking.
Also, while there might be bad areas in town, they’re not ultra dangerous and crime is not rampant. And when I say bad, I mean that the housing conditions are poor.
However, being that Green Bay plays home to 100,000 plus citizens, there are tons of ways to pass the time…and many are very affordable.
Green Bay has an iconic amusement park. Literally, Bay Beach has been around since the early Twenties. And, if you were to purchase tickets, it might addle your mind. I guess, if I were to be more precise, you might actually believe you were back in the 1930’s…that is, until you look at the parking lot.
Near the amusement park, and free to the public, is the Green Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s a zoo of sorts. Yet, mainly, creatures native to northeast Wisconsin are on display. This park also has trails apt for hiking and skiing.
Bairds Creek is another free park. There, you can frisbee golf, mountain bike, bike, run, walk or hike. The park is well maintained and open year round.
So, long story short, Green Bay has a ton of parks and recreation. I just wanted to point out a few these very unique spots. Their entertainment value, when considering the surrounding area, is unrivaled.
Plus, and I’d also love to further illustrate this point, Green Bay has a few excellent historical museums. While some of the hours are rather sporadic, you could definitely educate yourself within these institutions.
As for food and drink, Green Bay has a full assortment…without the big city prices. Some of these hangouts are fun and creative establishments.
The city’s school system is great, and a few first rate colleges are in the metro area.
As for necessities and retail, the cost of living is certainly agreeable…granted, you have to know where the bargains are. And property taxes, as I think of the cost of living, well, they’re not killing me.
Moreover, and this is important, the climate is bearable. I know, those of you who are Packer fans, and have watched a December game, may think that Green Bay is too cold. Dude, I spent three years in Alaska. Compared to the arctic circle, this area’s winters are short and mild.
Besides short winters, the area experiences four full seasons. And yeah, fall foliage, emerald summers and flowery springs make the place enjoyable. Not to mention, around Green Bay, Lake Michigan’s clear waters allow for sporting…the same can be said for its outlets and tributaries.
With all that I’ve mentioned, I haven’t touched on the surrounding landscape of Wisconsin, with the Niagara Escarpment, dune laden beaches, rocky shores…man I could go on, but what I’m saying, to be brief, is that hiking, biking and camping is a treat in the Badger State.
Also, and this isn’t even a side note, Midwesterners are fairly friendly. So, even if you’re out on your own, it doesn’t seem like it.
And…Finally…
I have to say it, because, where I was born and raised, it was in the water, anyways, I’m a Packer fan, and even though the team has experienced rough patches, my allegiance has never waned. So yes, being about five miles from Lambeau Field…that’s cool!
So, with all that being said, that’s why I love Green Bay, Wisconsin. I know, and it’s a safe assumption, that many of my friends, those that have seen the world and came back home, will certainly buy what I’m selling.
Have an Excellent Day!!
