Where did your name come from?
Of all the things I should know, at least pertaining to myself, it would be where my name comes from. After all, in school, I loved history, and I loved geography, and, well, if you’re into those areas of study…last names are a breeze. And many times, especially if you’re of European descent, if you were to tell me your name, I could make an accurate guess as to your name’s origins. Yet, with all that said, and all I seemingly know…my name, Karas, I’m really not sure where it comes from. In this post I’ll tell you why.
First off, I’ve had some people tell me, and I believe it’s a word for fish, anyways, some have guessed that my name is derived from the Greek language. However, I don’t think that’s where my name comes from. Mainly, because I don’t think I’m Greek.
And I guess I should explain myself further. I say that I’m not sure, that is to my name’s origins, because I’m not crystal clear as to every European nation my ancestors hailed from. I mean, my mom…fully Polish. And while my Dad’s mom was full German, his dad was a mutt. Believe it or not, my grandfather even had indigenous blood flowing through his veins. Lo and behold, and obviously, my grandfather is where my name originates.
Some people with the name Karas come from Germany. Was my grandfather German? He could have been, I don’t know. Because it might have been possible, I’ve researched that surname. Based on a few Google searches, many German names indicate where the family was from. I believe, somewhere in Germany, there is a Karas River.
But really, that’s speculation, and there’s a clearer guess as to where my name was birthed. I know, and yes, I’m sure that my grandfather was Bohemian…or Slavic. When those Slavs reached Ellis Island, many Bohemian immigrants shortened their name, which was originally Karrasova, to Karas. This actually makes sense, and, although I’m not one hundred percent sure, I choose to believe that theory.
So, very long story short, my name comes from Bohemia. Though, I could be very wrong. A good friend of mine, who really didn’t care much for her heritage, proudly declared she was American. So, yeah, even if I’m VERY proud of my heritage…Karas…it’s an American name
Have an Excellent Day!
