Your life without a computer: what does it look like?
If I didn’t have a computer, damn, I actually remember those days. And although many daily activities would be altered, I think the greatest change would deal with my writing. So, in this post, I’ll explain what my life would be without my PC.
First off, if I didn’t have a computer, my office would be cluttered. Stacks of dusty manuscripts, ones that would never be published, would sit on my bookshelf. I’d also have letters, important pieces of paper…you know, bills, appointments, credit card applications, anyways, those would be piled on my desk.
Besides the extra papers, the other huge alteration, and, yeah, it’d be horribly time consuming, would be my writing technique. Well, okay, maybe my technique wouldn’t change, I guess, if I’m to express myself more accurately, my writing regimen would be slow and arduous.
Imagine just typing.
No spellcheck.
No undo.
No delete button.
No font changes.
Granted, when I was a youngster, when I think back to typewriters, I did perform writing in a different manner. But now, in this day and age, crafting a written work is much more efficient. And without the multiple rewrites, which, by the way, I sorta do anyways, my writing becomes much more powerful.
While crafting the perfect page, instead of wasting an entire afternoon, one can hammer it out in less than an hour. And really, the traditionalist may see it as cheating. I think it allows authors, and writers, a chance to get creative with their voices. Instead of wondering if we misspelled hypochondriac, we can seek out more powerful ways to covey our thoughts.
I guess, if I’m to be totally honest, our effectiveness has been improved by modern technology….When I read novelists like Charles Dickens, I often ponder if his voice would be different. Don’t get me wrong, his literature is still masterful. I just think he’d put many of today’s authors to shame. I believe he wrote ‘A Christmas Carol’ in six weeks. SIX WEEKS!! Did they even have whiteout back then?
What I’m saying is this, my computer makes me a better writer. And I believe that would be the greatest change in my life. While my creative process and ideals would be parallel, if I were lacking a computer, my effectiveness would, most likely, crash.
And I think, as I read great bits of modern literature, we, the readers, benefit from this technology. Yet, with all that said…I fear AI.
Have an Excellent Day!!
