What historical event fascinates you the most?
History. That, undoubtedly, was my favorite subject in school…especially American history. And today, while I must ponder my favorite event, I’ll tell you what, given all the documented happenings on earth, I find the most fascinating.
After I had watched Hamilton, I realized, with much humility, that there was much about the American Revolution I had forgotten. No, I’m not under the delusion that I had lived through it. However, I did learn much about the event during High School.
So, since it’s a favorite era of mine, I did some reading. Mainly, Joseph J Ellis books informed me of those formative years. And of the most interesting, and it still plays a role in our daily lives, were the books about the Constitutional Convention.
In fact, because of my interest in the constitutional convention, I’ve read some, definitely not all, but some of the Federalist Papers. If you really want to feel the social and political climate of post Revolutionary War America, and if you can get past the verbose styles of the time, those documents make for interesting reads. A historian may be able to explain that era, but those papers illustrate, not only the United State’s dire situation, but the schools of thought reverberating throughout the land.
Of course, my knowledge of the convention, being mediocre at best, comes from second hand accounts. From what I understand, very little of the debates were documented while they occurred. And really, I rely on historians to give me accurate descriptions.
When looking back at that important conference, you’ll discover blatant contradictions. Yet, the wise men in that room, humans with intellect and foresight, knew enough to outline an effective governing body.
So, I could give more detailed reasons for my fascination. Yet, because of what I have just conveyed, I don’t think it’s necessary.
Have an Excellent Day!!
