What was your favorite subject in school?
Everybody excels at something. Well, okay, maybe excel is too strong of a word. How about this? Everybody has a strong suit. Today, as I recollect my dismal high school career, I’ll tell you about the subject I loved most.
History: that was my favorite class in school. It’s literally the story of mankind. And, yes, because men have flaws, some of what we know is muddled, and, more to the point, other understandings may be just plain wrong.
I think that’s the most interesting part of history: those elements that may be misunderstood. Some men, those with passion and purpose, and who believe that the facts are skewed, might work vigorously to bring new facts to light. It has happened, and I’m sure it will happen again.
I say this, because, as I read more books delving into our past, I realize that many of my previous understandings were faulty. I guess when you’re taught history as a child, and although my high school teachers were rather enlightening, you believe those in power were much like your teachers.
Yet, when you unveil the truth, those governors weren’t simply overseers, many were power hungry avaricious men…and many were pompous individuals who viewed the common man as inferior…yes, this even pertains to some of your founding fathers…and yes, I know they claimed to believe that all men were created equal.
I know, I sound like I’m carping. But, and I wouldn’t say this without firm foundation, much of what I learned in school was somewhat biased. And I guess, yes, because history is a constant search for truth, I love that subject more than any other.
Have an Excellent Day!
