What books do you want to read?
Lately, I’ve made a rather ambitious vow. During every winter, and into early spring, I read more than usual. Since I’ve stated that undeniable fact, I’ll tell you, in a blunt manner, that I want to read more old books…nineteenth century literature novels to be exact. In this post, I’ll tell you why.
Every art form has a golden age. If one pointed towards a turning point for paintings and literature, there was the renaissance. However, later on, the Victorian Era witnessed a reinvention of traditional art.
If you were looking for novel paintings, Van Gogh and Monet answered that call, and they birthed Impressionism. With that, and just as importantly, literature saw great writers, ones who told very human tales, and they sold their books hand over fist.
Being that there is a language barrier, I’m not apt to read renaissance literature. I don’t understand Old English, so it would be an ill fated pursuit.
Yet, nineteenth century literature, well my vocabulary skills can digest most books from that era. To tell the truth, if I were to surmise a beginning to modern literature, I’d pick the Victorian Era. The stories, and their themes, still resonate forward into modern times.
So, for sparks in my own creative mind, I’ll look towards some old stories, ones with themes that absolutely worked, and I’ll interpret them, and approach them, with my own understanding.
As for modern literature, I need to find a great action packed mystery novel. I like Dan Brown, but I’ve literally read everything the man has written. So, for now, Great Expectations, the Brontë sisters, and books, and writers, along those lines will be my winter reads.
Have an Excellent Day!!
