Have you ever unintentionally broken the law?

Sometimes, whether we want to or not, whether we were aware or we weren’t or whether we simply didn’t care or just had blatant disregard, well, sometimes we may break a law. And, yes, sometimes those choices are spurred by pure idiocy. In this short post, while I draw from my recent past, I’ll give you one such instance.

Here it goes….

In my recent memories, as I rack my brain, I can think of one particular incident, while there are probably more, when I had accidentally violated a law. And, believe it or not, it occurred during a trip to the Brown County Courthouse.

You see, I rarely carry change on my person, and the parking meters that line Green Bay’s well kept city streets, at least those near the courthouse, well, at least back then, they didn’t have any other payment method.

So, what did I do? Because I was lacking change, of course, I found the spot without a meter. I didn’t bother to read the elevated sign rising from the sidewalk. A free spot…well, it’s a free spot.

Did I find the fact that this one spot had no meter a bit odd? Yeah, I absolutely did, but, considering I had a severe urge to urinate, my thought process was rushed, and I slammed my car’s door, and I bolted towards the nearest courthouse restroom.

After I took care of my legal papers, and when I sauntered through a sun splashed afternoon, I noticed the reason for the meter’s absence. Yes, with the courthouse behind me, and my car in plain sight, I noticed a blue sign, one right next to my chosen spot, and it was practically luminescent in the sunlight.

You guessed it, that sign was emblazoned with a white universal handicap symbol…yeah, I went to the courthouse…and I had the audacity to park in the handicap spot.

Needless to say, under my driver’s side windshield wiper, tucked neatly in a quaint paper envelope, my justly deserved award for such stupidity awaited. As I drew the ticket from my car, my mind realized how brassy and idiotic I must have appeared.

So, long story short, when heading to the Brown County Courthouse…dude, bring some change!

Have an Excellent Day!
