Do you enjoy your job?
Years ago, I had made a decision. That decision, which changed my life for the better, was applying at a retail store. I didn’t know what I was getting into…but it was a steady paycheck.
It’s been over twenty years since my first day. There has been triumphant moments, there has been chaotic instances and there has been humiliating circumstances. So, like anything, especially a long term employment stint, I’ve experienced vivid and lasting memories, ones I’ll take into my advanced age.
I like the fact that my store is diverse, and I don’t mind being the middle aged white guy. Most of the kids, I’m mentioning my younger coworkers, well, they’re Hmong, Hispanic, African or African American. Believe me, it has taught me, being that I was brought up in an all white community, that racial inclusion, and racial sensitivity, must be consciously practiced.
Sometimes, even though we never meant any harm, our words can be misconstrued, and we may unintentionally offend someone. I’m learning that this fact doesn’t only pertain to white people. I thought, since I was in the majority, that other races were able to express themselves more liberally. I’m finding out, as it should be, that all must be wary of cultural and ethnical differences, and we must show deep respect for those humans…and it shouldn’t be preached, it should simply be normal.
Of course beyond that, my job offers me an outlet. I can simply focus, and I can try my best…sometimes, I simply need a challenge, and, many times, my job obliges. Don’t get me wrong, once in a while, my tasks are a little much, and, once in a while, I complain about them, and, once in a while, I need to step away, but, mostly, I just want to do my best.
So, if you were to ask me, “Do I like my job?”
I’d answer with, “It gives me purpose, and a purposeful life is a positive life.”
Have an Excellent Day!!
