What was the best compliment you’ve received?

You know, it’s a bland compliment, and it’s broad and general, and, at one point in time, I absolutely hated it. Now, I kind of long to hear, “Chris, you’re a nice guy.” In this short post, I’ll tell you why.

When I was younger, I had a pretty girlfriend. When one looked upon her, and when they took one look at me…well, I just wasn’t that great to look at. Which caused me to wonder, “Hey, exactly why are you with me?”

That girl always replied, “ Because you’re a nice guy.”

I hated that answer, and she never elaborated. I thought it was truly vague. And to tell the truth, I don’t know if I was happy with simply being ‘A Nice guy’

Now, I realize, and guess I realized it back then, and I guess I didn’t realize how important it was, anyways, being a nice guy is something that should be valued. And yes, I guess I’m kind of happy with being the nice guy. It’s vague, it’s general, and I feel it should be mandatory, but it’s better than being known as the butthead, the moron…well, whatever seething remark that has emanated from the lips of my acquaintances.

In closing, life is tough. If someone compliments you on being a nice guy, don’t reject it. Accept that as what it is, refusing to accept an accurate adjective may open a can of worms.

That girl, she’s doing fine. And yes, although her path led her to someone other than me, I believe she found a nice guy.
