My boss loves Barcelona…the soccer team, not the city. Yesterday, on our first break, I watched his team get crushed by PSG. I kinda felt bad.
Then, after PSG’s fourth goal, I looked at the other Champions League game’s score, and, dude, I knew I had to leave(the break room)…because a big smile would be riding my face.
When rooting for soccer teams, I think I’m different than most. Most fans will cheer on their team, and they’ll wish the demise of their rivals. I, on the other hand, root for an entire league…the Bundasliga. Yesterday, Dortmund, a Bundasliga powerhouse, made it to the Champions League semifinals. Yet…uh…Barcelona was now out of the tournament…
I think what I should understand, especially when writing about soccer, is that I’m simply a passive fan. Yes, I simply watch to be entertained. To many others, their oath to a certain club…well, I really don’t know if spiritual would be too strong of a word. And I saw it on my boss’s face.
The dude still performed his job well, yet, the effect of the game was slightly visible. So, yesterday’s lesson was: ‘show respect to the fan’, and I certainly will.
Entertainment is the Goal!
