2024’s MLS saga is unfurling before our eyes, and there are many interesting subplots in this soccer story…ugh!…that was a bit over the top. However, this middle aged, hopelessly white, ignorant American has been enjoying North America’s brand of soccer. So much so, that, today, in this brief little blog post, I’m going to tell you what games I’m dying to watch.
Usually, I really focus on the Saturday games. Yet, this week, my favorite teams are playing on Sunday. Don’t get me wrong, there are some very interesting matches also happening on Saturday. You know what, considering both days are packed with action, I’ll hype games on both days. I’ve chosen five curious clashes I’m dying to see.
First off, let’s start with Columbus versus Portland. The visitors, the Portland Timbers, while they are currently sitting eighth in the Western Conference standings, are second in goals scored…in that same conference.
Columbus, on the other hand, while they were the best goal scoring threat of 2023, haven’t demonstrated that same flare. Right now, as far as goal scoring accomplishments, they rank near the middle of the Eastern Conference. That being said, they still have the same talent from last year. Is this the breakout game? Or is head coach Wilfried Nancy content with fewer scored goals and even fewer goals allowed?
This game happens in Columbus, starting at 7:30 EST. Saturday’s weather, with no signs of precipitation, promises to have temps in the mid forties.
Okay, being that I feel I have to do this, and while this isn’t my chosen game, Messi is expected to play in Miami on Saturday. So, while I think the Crew versus the Timbers is a great matchup, the no brainer is Inter Miami versus Nashville FC.
Secondly…man, What’s up with Sporting Kansas City? Granted, Inter Miami, and Lionel Messi, is no easy feat, but this team can’t hold a lead like Biz Markie can’t hold a tune. Yes, of the last three Sporting games I’ve watched, two of them, yes TWO of them, seen them blowing multiple goal leads…and I had thought they were a great defensive team!
On the flipside, St. Louis is relishing a win over a hot Austin club. I’m actually expecting fireworks, and No, it’s probably way too early for fan appreciation night. Though who knows, there actually might be fireworks after the game, I haven’t checked SKC’s schedule.
One thing is for sure, the game won’t be played at Arrowhead, I actually prefer Children’s Mercy Park anyways. Once again, excellent game time temps, mid forties to be exact, will make for comfortable playing weather.
Saturday evening features the New York Red Bulls taking on LAFC. This looks to be an excellent match. LAFC, after a rather rough start, haven’t lost 3 or their last four games…gaining two wins, one tie and one defeat in that stretch. Plus, their offense is beginning to show signs of life.
On the other side of the pitch, after being blanked by Chicago, the Red Bulls, with leading goal scorer Lewis Morgan, look to reassert themselves against the Club from Cali. When kickoff arrives, the fans can look forward to a beautiful Californian evening.
Okay, now for the games I would really love to see. The LA Galaxy are probably the best team in the league. Yes, even with Messi in the game, I think LA has an edge over Miami. The Galaxy have multiple scoring threats, and their defense, while not the best in the league, is good enough to earn victories.
The Los Angeles club will take on struggling San Jose. Even if the Quakes are low in the standings, I expect max effort, and, though they’ve dropped a ton of points from a winning position, they might have their eyes firmly fixed on an upset.
Once again, the Los Angeles evening weather should be absolutely accommodating.
Lastly, the Loons will take on Charlotte. I’ve watched every Loons game this year, yet I have only seen one half of a Charlotte game…I hear they’re doing well. That being said, MNUFC’s new coach should help end Minnesota’s mini winless streak…the twin cities men really need that!
There’ll probably be rain showers at the five o’ clock kickoff, yet, they’ll most likely stop before the end of the first half,,and the temps will be cool. The weather might actually favor visiting Minnesota.
Okay, anyways, that’s what I want to watch this week. There is much more action slated for this weekend, but the matches listed above certainly have my attention. I hope you find a few exciting as well!
Entertainment is the Goal!!
