During this past weekend, the MLS put on quite a show!…And Since that was the undeniable truth, I just have to ask, “Where were you?”
I can hear you sputter, “I didn’t even know soccer was being played!” Had you read my Friday post, being that I was amped for Saturday’s games, you would have known that a full slate of matches were being exhibited, and you would have known that I had made a few viewing selections.
That should have tipped you off…dude, yes, I’ve been watching this league for quite some time, so I have ideas on what to watch. However, as I recall those Apple TV broadcasts, I must confess, to my disappointment, some of those selections did not live up to my expectations. Yeah, my last post, ughh…it was a bust.
For instance, during my chosen seven thirty game, Minnesota United had made an interesting decision, and it kind of killed the game’s entertainment value. While up only one goal, and only two thirds into the game, Minnesota inserted defensive specialists for strikers. From then on, no team had a threatening shot on goal.
Yet, despite Minnesota’s defensive dominance, the first twenty minutes were exciting. I had actually thought this would be a closer contest, but, after the Loons had scored the first two goals of the match. Sporting Kansas City instantly became apparent losers. With all that said, I’m definitely pleased with the outcome.
Another match that started out hot, and then, in a very odd twist, ended up being a lopsided affair, was Austin FC versus the LA Galaxy…and no, the Galaxy did not win. Austin came to play, and, during this Texas showdown, the Galaxy’s pistols weren’t as sharp as their underdog hosts. Again, after a very exciting first half, it was evident that the Galaxy were not going to come back.
Oh, during my pre game build ups, I had also mentioned that Inter Miami and New England were facing off. Again, like the previously recapped matches, this contest was competitive for only a half, so, being a tale of two totally different forty five minute periods, it also turned out to be a disappointment. Eh, 65,000 fans turned out to see Messi…and they weren’t let down. The Man scored two goals. However, if you were seeking out more than a Messi expo, and if you desired a competitive finish, this was not the game. After a New England goal in the first minute, the Revolution did not score again, and Miami tallied four scores.
Okay, on the other hand, Philadelphia versus Salt Lake was actually action packed, hotly contested and compelling entertainment. In the end, the Union received their first loss. Although, through most of the game, the win was certainly up for grabs.
Finally, Portland versus LAFC was also a bust. In the first half, the Los Angeles boys cranked out a three goal lead. Even if Portland did get two goals back, it was evident that, again, by half time, the game was already decided.
So, there’s my apology. Will you pay attention to this Friday’s post, being that my latest guesses were horribly inaccurate? I really can’t see why not. I may not have all the answers, and I’m certainly a middle aged, hopelessly white, clueless American, but…I like the game of soccer. If you’re like me, we can certainly start a conversation.
Entertainment is the Goal!
