This past Saturday produced a few great MLS contests, and I had watched a few…surprisingly many other showdowns were better. While I may not have picked the absolute best matches, the games I did decide to check out kept me satisfied. So, now that you know what I did Saturday night, and now that I’ve had time to ruminate about those entertaining events, I’ll tell you all about them.
First off, the game I was dying to see, and a game that seemed to be well worth my time, was Minnesota United versus Sporting Kansas City. I was happy to see the Loons dominate most of the match. That triumph begs a thought. With the Loons best player heading to Mexico, this team has never been better. So…does superior coaching outweigh premium talent?
While the loons have tons of quality players, which includes Norwich City legend Temu Pukki, no one United player seems worthy of the Super Star label. Yet, what am I saying? With Minnesota only losing one of their last seven games, I’d say this is a team full of superstars…but Eric Ramsey is definitely leading the way.
On the flip side, SKC…they’ve got serious problems. At the start of the season, this team certainly seemed to be a contender, and they seemed to be off to a better start. Yet, nine or ten games without a league win, again, makes their playoff chances, much like last season, seem like a very tall task.
Next up, LAFC versus Dallas was a bit of a disappointment. With LAFC’s recent surge, and with their goal scoring talents, I was expecting an elite team performance. Instead, Dallas were the aggressors in the second half, and the Los Angeles boys seemed to be looking beyond the visiting Texas team. However, before the final whistle, LAFC found the back of the net, and their fans drove home happy.
Lastly, and while you might not think it, an excellent match was Orlando City versus the New York Red Bulls. Yes, even if only one goal was scored, the energy, and gameplay for that matter, made this athletic exhibition very entertaining. And this game confirms one of my firmest soccer beliefs: A ton of goals doesn’t mean premium entertainment. Yes, interesting action is everything a match really needs.
Okay, this Saturday was fun, but, guess what, the international break is coming. So, only a handful of MLS games will be played this upcoming weekend. Even if that’s the case, my favorite MLS team, Minnesota United, will suit up and set sights on the soccer net, and I’ll write another Friday preview. Until then, enjoy the rest of your week!
Entertainment is the Goal!!
