What are 5 everyday things that bring you happiness?
Today’s prompt, which asks me to list things that make me happy, is a tough one. The question begs a little reflection. I’m not your typical individual, though I try to be. Being a bachelor, one who lives on his own, I can’t say my children make me happy, because I have none. But I do have things that I lean on, especially when struck by a doleful mood.
I guess one would be, and I work at it, so it makes me all the prouder, is this…writing. Sometimes, when filled with doubt or loneliness, I’ll read something I’ve written. Sometimes, I’ll cringe, thinking, “Man, What the hell was wrong with me?” Yet, most times I’m fairly proud of my efforts, and I think to myself, “See, you are capable of producing good work.” In short, when reading a piece I particularly like, at least from myself, my self esteem grows.
Secondly, I’d say exercise makes me happy. The runners high, the sweat and the feeling of accomplishment, knowing I did something good for me, is a positive part of my daily routine. Plus, when I look in the mirror, I’m proud of the results.
I also like photography, and I take pictures often. I’m not the best photographer, but, right now, one of my photos is hanging on a gallery wall. To say I’m proud, well, that’s an understatement. Admittedly, when I compare my photo to the works surrounding it, I kind of ask myself, “Does mine really belong here?” It’s cool to be in such company.
You probably won’t believe it when I tell you, but work is on this list. Being a productive member of society…yeah, that’s important to me. And knowing that I’m contributing to the economy, not burdening it, well, It’s a feeling of self worth. Plus, it allows me to interact with people, and that’s an added bonus.
Finally, food makes me happy, especially when grinding out the last few hours of work. I cook for myself, so, I look forward to cooking my after work meal…it rarely disappoints.
I know, this post is a bit of bragging… and my boastfulness can be alienating. Though, truthfully, if anybody truly knows me, they know that they are just as capable of making themselves happy. I’m no one special, and really, that knowledge is motivation. And I think that makes me the happiest, knowing each day is a test, and realizing that finishing on top is doubtful. It spurs me to attain better results.
Have an excellent day!!

This is a great post – honest and thoughtful. Writing, exercise, and food make me happy, too. And while I’m retired, I still accomplish things that require work. Working hard is good for us in several ways. The others I would add for me are travel, reading and my family. My home makes me happy, too. I do believe in Lincoln’s quote – “Most folks are about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” Thanks for your uplifting post!

I agree with Lincoln. And yes, travel and family do make me very happy, but I don’t experience that every day. However, I’ll admit, I did forget to include reading. That is literally the most therapeutic of all my daily activities.
