Write about your first crush.

Today’s prompt, as I sit back with a smile curving my lips, is cause for nostalgia. I’d have to go back, way back, to remember my first crush. But I do, and I still call this woman a friend.

However, back then, when I had the courage to ask her to tie the knot, well, we were six years old. But I remember that day…

There I was, clothed in a hospital gown, cardboard Spock ears sat upon my upper ear lobes and I held a paper Starship Enterprise in my hands…my mom had purchased a Star Trek activity book at the hospital’s gift shop.

My tonsils were freshly removed, and my hospital stay was extended because of infection. We stood at the threshold of the room, and I whizzed my little spaceship towards the window.

We were getting along quite well, and I was explaining everything about my paper toys. She seemed interested in what I had to say. If you’re wondering about our parents, I don’t remember where the heck they were. Don’t get in a tizzy, we were in a small town hospital. Had I decided to head outdoors, someone would have stopped me.

Anyways, there I was, watching the Enterprise skid across the linoleum tile. It seemed like a sure fire bet. So, I turned towards the girl, and, in a very genuine tone, asked her to marry me.

She stunned me with her nonchalant reply, “No.”

“Okay,” I shrugged. I mean, I was six. I still had plenty of time, and she hadn’t turned and fled. Instead, I informed her about Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy. I also made sure she knew, because it was the most important thing in my young world, that Star Wars was better than Star Trek.

We’re grown now. She lives out of state, happily married with children. Me? Well, I’m still looking for Mrs. Right. Don’t worry, I know now, and I certainly didn’t back then, that talking about Star Trek doesn’t work on the chicks.

  1. Talking about Star Trek doesn’t work on the chicks? Maybe you aren’t meeting the right type of chicks?
