What’s your favorite word?

Dude! How are you? Okay, I’ll have to say this, because my word choice might rub some the wrong way, my favorite word might surprise you. It’s hardly professional, nor is it poetic. To be brutally honest, it’s garbage slang. Nonetheless, my favorite word, and, yes, I use it often, anyways, that word would be…you guessed it: it’s dude.

I know, I’m a middle aged guy, so using the word ‘dude’, well, some might hear me use this slangy word, and they might suspiciously ask, “ Chris, are you on drugs?”

And I’d respond with, “Nah, haven’t touched them since the nineties.” To be honest, I only experimented a handful of times. And my sincere advice to kids, and I really mean it: ‘Drugs are overrated. Plus, they’re so dangerous, it’s not worth it. And sticking with that, there are better ways to make yourself feel good, or outlets that offer a break from your current reality.’

Take it from me, although, very sparingly, I’ll pour myself an alcoholic drink, my true highs come from mountain biking, hiking and running.

But, dude, I’m getting off track. So, I’ll detail my use of ‘dude’ a bit more.

When I witness something awe inspiring, I’ll exclaim, “Dude, that was awesome!” Sometimes, because, in many instances, what I define as ‘awesome’ might be off putting, I’ll receive dirty looks…or maybe, possibly, they just didn’t approve of my word choice.

When you tick me off, and I want to let you know, especially if what you said was unacceptable, I’ll let out a stern, “Dude!”

If something catches me off guard, and I’m delighted by a fortuitous chain of events, I’ll chirp, “Dude!” People usually detect my genuine surprise.

Conversely, if something is woefully miserable, and I detest having to endure said plague, I might exhale, growling a low and pained, “dude.” That get’s the point across.

Finally, if you’re someone from my past, a friend I’m earnestly glad to see, I might shout a jubilant, “ DUDE!” Many times, because some feel it’s disrespectful, although, honestly, I simply can’t help myself, anyways, that friend might teasingly respond with a “Dude!” of their own.

So yeah, unfortunately, dude is my favorite word. It’s been part of my vernacular since I was nineteen. And strangely enough, sometimes, even if I cringe after using it, I simply can’t help myself.
