I love Christmas lights, and I appreciate those who put effort into their holiday decorating. That being said, when I appreciate something, I attempt to emulate those exceptional acts. My hopes, and yes I love to do it, is to bring cheer to passersby. Yet, I don’t have much cash, so my budget allows for only a few strands. In this post, I’ll explain how I decorate on a budget.
First off, I assess what’s practical. I mean, ask yourself, “where can I nail, where can I route cords and what would actually look nice?”Also, keep in mind, should you use too many cords, yeah, you might blow a fuse.
Second, come up with a few Ideas. Try to visualize your house with the lights on. What will it look like? Of course, you’re on a budget. So, don’t walk into a store with a concrete plan. Keep your ideas in mind, but, if you stumble upon cheap yard decor…improvise. Or, if your plan exceeds your budget, concede defeat, and find a better alternative.
Third, don’t go for the flashiest light sculpture. Keep in mind, most people who see your lights, well, they’re driving by. You don’t need a detailed yard ornament.
Next, shop Walmart and thrift stores. I’d say forty percent of my decor came from second hand shops. The others, well, discount retailers had great deals, and the decorations actually survived more than one year.
Next, keep those hidden expenses in mind. There will be costs you hadn’t anticipated, especially if you’re decorating for the first time. Cords, replacement bulbs, gutter clips…these small expenses add up, and they can push you over budget!
Lastly, don’t be too serious. Take decorating lightly, and, maybe, make it a fun outing. It is work, but, hey, the final product, you won’t be the only one who appreciates it.
Happy Holidays!
